What to wear snowmobiling in Saariselkä?
We provide the heavy-duty outer gear, but you need to layer up underneath. Snowmobiling can be sweaty work, or chilly if you are sitting in the back. It's good to have layers you can add or remove.
- Bring: Warm thermal underwear, a fleece mid-layer, and light outdoor trousers.
- Optionally: a light jacket or lightweight down jacket
- Earplugs are a good extra
- Tip: Wear the helmet balaclava we provide! It protects your neck from the freezing wind, which saves you from a stiff neck later.
Avoid long scarves or loose accessories. They can get caught in moving parts.
Can I take children?
Yes! Luontoloma Rentals is a family-friendly snowmobile rental company. A child can sit as a passenger if their feet reach the footrests and they can hold tightly onto the handles. Never put a child in front of the driver.
Safe Snowmobile Driving & Route Etiquette
In Saariselkä, all snowmobile routes are classified as official roads. They are free to use and require no permit. Drivers must have a valid driving license.
Snowmobile Traffic Rules
- Stay on the trail: Off-road driving (freeriding) is strictly forbidden to protect nature and reindeer.
- Never leave the official snowmobile route! Only official routes are safe for beginners.
- Drive on the right side of the track. Pass oncoming traffic on the right.
- Speed limits: Max 60 km/h on trails, 40 km/h on roads (if crossing, driving on the road is generally prohibited), and 20 km/h near the village.
- Zero Tolerance: The alcohol limit in Finnish traffic is strictly 0%. Save the beers for the sauna after the ride!
- Always use headlights.
- Helmet required for both driver and passenger.
- Watch out for locals: Reindeer may be on the track. Also, at campfire spots, the Siberian jay birds (kuukkeli in Finnish) are known to inspect riders' snack supplies. They are friendly – feel free to feed them. We recommend packing extra bread just for them.
In case of trouble
The snowmobile's traffic insurance covers personal injuries to both the driver and the passenger, as well as damages and injuries caused to an innocent third party.
At Lapin Luontolomat, the deductible (self-liability) is €1200–€2200 per snowmobile in the event of a collision or other damage. If the snowmobile breaks down naturally, you are not responsible for repair costs.
As with any outdoor excursion, for safety reasons, it is good to let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
